These sectors typically handle very sensitive data (UK GDPR: special category data) about clients, many of whom are likely to be vulnerable. This means it is essential that you handle their data correctly, in other words sensitively, ethically and legally. If you don’t do this it could cause considerable harm to individuals and organisations, possibly resulting in enforcement action being taken by the Information Commissioner. This would, of course, be likely to end up causing very bad publicity, making it difficult to operate effectively – would you give your sensitive data to a charity known for handling it incorrectly?

Computer Law Training are preferred suppliers of data protection training to the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). This means that we undertake various data protection training courses for charities on their behalf. However, we also provide a range of scheduled training and bespoke courses directly to Third Sector Organisations. This experience means we really do understand the needs and difficulties of charities.

SCVO have said:

“Computer Law Training delivers an ‘Introduction to data protection and GDPR’ course for us as part of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisation’s training programme. They have worked closely with us to develop a course programme that is tailored for charities and third sector organisations and covers the basic principles of GDPR. It gives delegates the knowledge they need to work towards compliance within their own organisation. The feedback we have received has been positive and delegates have appreciated Computer Law Training’s ability to give helpful examples and make a complex issue easier to understand.”

Live Online Data Protection Training for Charities

We can also provide ‘in-house’ live training for decision makers or all staff.

In order to get it right we like to start with a chat to determine your needs. Then we agree on the details of your course.

Some charities need a two or three-hour session for all staff or for senior decision-makers while others require a full day. Yet others need two half days, one for all staff and one for senior decision makers.

We are aware that this sector is not generally well funded and try to keep costs to a minimum.

We also offer a GDPR surgery session for one or more people. This is suitable for anyone with specific data protection responsibilities. During the session, they can ask and discuss specific questions they may have about data protection compliance. Some of our clients only require a single consultation to check their compliance level with data protection law. Sometimes it is simply a matter of confidence! Other clients need more regular guidance on their progress towards compliance.

We strongly believe that data protection compliance is something a charity should work out for itself, with training or advice when necessary. Our training puts you in a position to do this. So it allows you to avoid paying a consultant large sums of money to do it all for you!

We’re only a ‘click’, call or e-mail away – so get in touch to have a chat about your needs.
